Walking directions from the Thames Path in Abingdon (Distance 1.3 miles)

Following the Thames Path to Abingdon, having reached the Abingdon Lock, keep to the South side of the river and you will come to a road-bridge over the river. Either take the steps up to the road or go under the bridge and walk back on yourself up the slope to the road. Once on the roadside, proceed towards the town (if you have come up the slope, you will need to turn left and cross the road as there is no continuous pavement).

Keep to the right side of the road, past a pub (the Broad Face) and a hotel (the Crown & Thistle), past a church (St Nicholas) and then you will come to the start of a parade of shops. Keep going to the end of this road past all the shops until to come to a set of traffic lights where you turn right. This road is called the Vineyard but it changes its name to Oxford Road at the next set of lights.

Having turned right into the Vineyard, and keeping on the right hand side of the road, you will shortly come to the next set of traffic lights (with a right hand turn into Abbey Close – signposted Superstore and District Council Offices). Cross Abbey Close and then cross the main road so that you are now heading north up the Oxford Road.

Keeping now to the left hand side of the road, walking past the BP garage, on the right you will see a small roundabout in front of the Catholic Church, then the big Convent School, then a small parade of shops with a launderette and Chinese Take-Away.

Keep on walking about half a mile until you get to a big staggered crossroads with traffic lights. On the right hand side is a pub called the ‘Boundary House’. Cross over the left hand turning (Northcourt Road) and keep heading north along the Oxford Road, cross over a small left hand turn (Picklers Hill) and go just a few yards further to take the very next left which doglegs back to be parallel to the main road. This is at house number 120 (Oxford Road) and we are at the other end of that service road (number 136).

There is a bus stop right outside our house on the main road and, if you prefer, you can catch a bus up the Oxford Road – in which case, please ask to be set off at the ‘South Avenue’ bus stop. When you get off the bus, we will be in front of you!

By Bus from Oxford: Take the Oxford City Bus X3, X13; or Thames Travel Bus X1, X2; or Stagecoach 31 (N31)

When the bus takes the slip road off the A34 (the fast dual carriageway road), it will travel up hill and turn left at the top of the road. The bus will then proceed to a roundabout where it will go straight across (second exit). Just after the roundabout, there is a bus stop (buses usually stop there but may not if it is late or if no one wants to get on or off – so do keep an eye out). Once past that stop, ring the bell so that the bus stops at the next stop (the ‘South Avenue’ stop) for you to get off (all stops are ‘request’ stops here and buses will not stop unless there is a demand).

Once off the bus, cross over the road and walk in the same direction the bus was travelling. In front of you, you will see the bus stop (again labelled ‘South Avenue’) for travelling back to Oxford. This stop is right in front of the house (Number 136) – albeit that there is a little slip road and a grass verge in-between!

Should you miss the stop, the next bus stop is labelled ‘Boundary House’ (it is the name of the pub that is at the crossroads in front of the stop) and you would just need to cross over the road again but now have to walk back a little way.

By Bus from Didcot or Milton Park: Take the Thames Travel Bus X1 or X2

This bus route operates from Didcot Parkway Rail Station and travels via Milton Park West, through Steventon, Drayton and Abingdon town centre. After leaving Abingdon town centre, the bus travels up the Oxford Road and the South Avenue bus stop is directly in front of the house.

By bus to/from Harwell Campus: Take the Stagecoach Bus No 34

This is a limited service that only operates during peak morning and evening times. Please see www.stagecoachbus.com for more details. The South Avenue bus stop for buses from Harwell is directly outside the front of the house. Buses to Harwell leave from a stop across the road.

By Train: The most convenient train station is Oxford and trains go there from London, Birmingham, etc.

From Oxford railway station, travel to Abingdon is by bus and could not be easier as there are buses that go directly from the station and then go past the Abbey Guest House before going into the centre of Abingdon.

Pick up the X3 bus from the station forecourt. The bus stop is the first on the left as you come down the stairs at the front of the station.

(There are other buses – the X2, X13 and 31 – that you can pick up if you go into the town but this is the only bus that goes direct from the station.)

Then follow the directions as given for bus travel from Oxford.

There are also buses from Didcot station – but these buses are not so frequent and the journey time is a lot longer (see bus directions from Didcot above).

There is a station at Radley but guests are strongly advised NOT to use this station to get to Abbey Guest House. This station is unmanned and does not have a convenient bus service, there is also no taxi rank at the station nor a public telephone available to call for one.

By Plane: Whether flying into Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton or Stansted, the easiest way to get to Abingdon by public transport is to take a bus or coach to Oxford from the airport.

If travelling by bus from either London, Heathrow or Gatwick, etc., you may find it easier to get off the Oxford Tube or Airport Bus one stop before the Gloucester Green terminal – check with the bus driver!

The bus should stop in High Street, you should find a stop (J4) to catch the X2, X3, X13 or 31 bus not far from wherever you get off (see directions on the bus stop display).

Then follow the directions as given for bus travel from Oxford.
