Abbey Guest House Environmental Policy

Green Tourism Silver AwardEarly in 2015 Abbey Guest House joined the Green Tourism scheme. In December that year the B&B had its first official audit and we were delighted to discover that we had already achieved a high Silver award standard.

Plans are already in place to try and raise that standard even higher – well before the next audit!

Abbey Guest House Environmental Policy (2015)

We strive continuously to ensure that, as far as possible, we consider the impact of what we do on our environment and that we have as little waste as possible. Currently we do the following:

Toiletries: We used to provide individual containers of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner and pretty packets of soap but we had so much waste – both packaging and half-used toiletries – that we decided to adopt a different policy. We now supply our guests with more expensive and better quality products from Gilchrist & Soames, in dispensers in the shower and by the wash-hand basin. This enables each guest to use as much as s/he would like whilst eliminating packaging and waste almost entirely.

Showers vs Baths: When Abbey Guest House was converted from a family house, all the bedrooms were fitted with en-suite showers to save water. From July 2009 there is a separate bathroom containing just a bath for guests that prefer to use this facility.

Towels: Towels are only changed daily, if required and requested, otherwise they will be changed after 3 days or if extremely wet. All the en-suites are warmed by heated towel rails and the “bath” room has a towel rail above a radiator.

Light Bulbs: Where possible our light bulbs are LEDs or ‘saver lamps’, with up to 80% energy saving compared with traditional bulbs. Mains powered external lights have a light sensor to bring them on automatically only when it is dark, and security lights have a movement sensor.

Heating: We have upgraded all the radiators, so that each has its’ own thermostat. The central heating is set on a continuous setting to enable the house to retain the heat without great surges of energy. In November 2015 new energy efficient boilers were installed to reduce energy consumption.

Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate and Sugar: we are now able to offer Fair Trade products.

Eggs & Meat Products: We buy from local family businesses. The Old Farm Shop (Milton) keep their own free-range chickens, pack the eggs and distribute the eggs from their own farm. As well as supplying us, Eadles Farm (Oxford) supplies meat to many local Farmers Markets and their pigs are also free-range animals.

Honey, Jams and Preserves: We buy these from local producers, that means locally kept bees, and locally produced fruit (for the majority of the preserves). The glass containers are also collected by both producers and reused after being sterilised.

Recycling: Where possible, we separate out any plastics, newspapers, glass, cans and card to enable these items to be collected by the local authority recycling service.

Guests are invited to make further suggestions for improvement to assist us in reducing our carbon footprint.
